How to apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN)
You can apply for a SIN online, in person at a Service Canada Centre, or by mail. Applying is free. You'll need a primary identity document, a secondary document if names differ, and proof of address. Most applicants receive their SIN on the same day in person.

After you get it
- Keep your SIN confidential.
- Give it to your employer and for tax purposes only when required.
