How the two tests are combined

How Services Australia decides your rate
StepWhat happens
1. Assets testTotal assessable assets less the free area, reduced by $3 per fortnight per $1,000
2. DeemingFinancial assets converted into assumed income at the deeming rates
3. Work BonusFirst $300 a fortnight of employment income excluded
4. Income testAssessable income less the free area, reduced by 50 cents per dollar
5. PaymentThe lower of the two results is paid

Worked example: Sarah, single homeowner

Sarah has $260,000 of financial assets and $25,000 of other assets — $285,000 in total, below the $321,500 free area, so the assets test leaves her at the maximum.

Deemed income on her financial assets is roughly $174.00 a fortnight, below the $212.00 income free area, so the income test also leaves her at the maximum. Her estimate is the full $1,148.60 a fortnight.

What this estimator does not model

  • Commonwealth Rent Assistance and other add-ons
  • Your Work Bonus income bank balance
  • Transitional rate pensions and couples separated by illness
  • Residential aged care arrangements and special disability trusts
  • Private trusts, private companies and pre-2015 income streams

Frequently asked questions

How is my Age Pension actually calculated?

Services Australia works out a rate under the assets test and a rate under the income test, then pays the lower of the two. The test producing the lower rate is called the binding test.

What does this estimator include?

Assets test free areas and the $3 per $1,000 taper, deeming on financial assets, the $300 Work Bonus on employment income, the income free area and the 50-cent taper, all at rates correct as at 20 March 2025.

What does it not include?

Rent Assistance, the Work Bonus income bank balance, transitional rate pensions, couples separated by illness, aged care arrangements, and special assessments for trusts, private companies and some income streams.

Should couples enter combined figures?

Yes. Enter combined assets and combined income; the result shown is the combined couple payment, normally split equally between partners.

Do I include my home?

No. Your principal home and up to two hectares of adjacent land are exempt from the assets test. Your homeowner status does change which free area applies.

Is the estimate binding on Services Australia?

No. This is an estimate for planning only — confirm your entitlement with Services Australia, which assesses your full circumstances.

Why is my estimate lower than I expected?

Usually because financial assets are counted twice: once in the assets test and again as deemed income in the income test. Check which test binds in the result panel.

Can I share or save my scenario?

Yes. Your inputs are stored in the page address, so copying the address bar keeps the exact scenario.
