How the income test estimate is worked out

  1. Employment income less the $300 Work Bonus exemption.
  2. Plus other assessable income, including deemed income from financial assets.
  3. Less the income free area for your situation.
  4. Halve the remainder — that is the fortnightly reduction.
  5. Subtract the reduction from the maximum rate.

For the deemed income figure to enter in the second field, use the Deeming Rate Calculator, or let the Combined Pension Estimator do it for you.

Frequently asked questions

How much income can I have before my Age Pension reduces?

A single person can have $212.00 of assessable income a fortnight and a couple $372.00 combined, as at 20 March 2025. Employment income also gets the $300 Work Bonus on top.

What should I enter as other income?

Deemed income from financial assets, net rent from investment property, foreign pensions, trust and company distributions, and assessable income stream payments. Do not enter actual bank interest or dividends — deeming replaces them.

Is the Work Bonus applied automatically here?

Yes. The estimator removes the first $300 of employment income each fortnight, matching the standard Work Bonus. It does not model your Work Bonus income bank balance.

At what income does the pension stop?

$2,510.00 a fortnight for a single person and $3,836.40 a fortnight combined for a couple, as at 20 March 2025.

Does this include the assets test?

No. This estimator shows the income test result only; Services Australia pays the lower of the income and assets test results.

How is the couple result shown?

As the combined couple payment. Each partner normally receives half of the combined amount.
